What it's about

Google has added a document feature to the Gemini app: Gemini can now create files directly in the chat, show them as a preview and edit them. Until now, you could generate and download files, but you had to keep editing them elsewhere and copy text between tabs. According to Chrome Unboxed and iPhone in Canada, the update is rolling out immediately to all users in every language where Gemini is available.

What it can do

According to Chrome Unboxed, Gemini generates Google Docs, Sheets, presentations, PDFs, Markdown and TXT files, and code, all of which appear right in the chat window. You can expand them to full screen and type text yourself, much like in a word processor. Gigazine also managed to change fonts and colors, as in regular Google Docs.

Alternatively, you can select passages of text or tables and enter a command in the "Describe changes" bar. In Google's demo video, handwritten lecture notes became a multi-page PDF study guide with formulas and tables. A selected table was turned into a bar chart with the prompt "show this as a graph instead." Digital Trends also mentions follow-up questions about selected paragraphs. You export through a menu at the top, either as a PDF or straight to Google Drive.

Hands-on test and limits

Gigazine had Gemini create a Google document from an article link, then asked it to "rewrite it simply for elementary school students." That worked. Important: only PDFs can be edited on both web and mobile. Docs, Sheets, Slides, Markdown, TXT and code are web-only for now.

Background

Digital Trends points to a busy month for Google: Gemini 4 Argon arrived for paying subscribers, and Gemini 4 Carbon recently topped the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index. Interactive learning formats and better app integrations were added as well.

Our take

This isn't a leap in model capability. It's a convenience upgrade that moves Gemini closer to chat interfaces with "canvas" editing. For students and office work, it saves a lot of copying. What's still unclear is how reliably it handles complex tables and layouts. The sources rely on Google's demo and a short test. On mobile, the feature set is still limited.
