Reddit moves to mandatory login: No account, no reading
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has announced plans to make the platform a fully "logged-in experience." Testing begins in Q4 in select markets outside the US. The drivers are AI scraping, falling search traffic and the ad business. Local AI setups with web search could be affected.

What it's about
Reddit wants to give access only to logged-in users in the future. CEO Steve Huffman called it a "logged-in-only experience." It was announced with the Q3 2026 earnings (shareholder letter and Reddit post). For about two decades, you could read Reddit without an account. When the change will reach everyone is still open.
What's planned
In the fourth quarter, the login requirement will first be tested in "select markets outside the US." Reddit then plans to assess how it affects the user experience, the business and the wider ecosystem, and to find "the right boundaries." It's unclear what logged-out visitors will see. The Verge asks what a friend sees when you send them a thread link. According to 9to5Google, Huffman said the logged-out home page is "useful and important," as is access for visitors arriving from search or external links. Reddit has also rebuilt the app's incognito mode and is relaunching it.
The reasons given
Huffman cites several reasons: - User experience: With a login, it's easier to find relevant content and communities. - Advertising: More signals for targeting; logged-in users are more engaged. Reddit doesn't need to know who you are ("Honestly, we don't want to know"), only that you're logged in. - Protection from scraping: The "majority" of unauthorized access, meaning scraping and data theft, comes through logged-out access. Licensing deals with AI companies such as OpenAI and Google (2024) are meant to stay. - Regulation: According to AdExchanger, stricter age verification for social networks worldwide also plays a role.
Falling search traffic and Google
In Q3, search traffic dropped "significantly," especially logged-out and web traffic. In October, referrals fell by more than a million per week on average. According to AdExchanger, Huffman partly blames Google's AI features (AI Overviews, AI Mode): "AI Mode does not drive traffic." He also says machine-translated content appears to have been demoted, which hits Reddit's AI translation strategy for international growth. Google keeps crawling Reddit "as hard as ever." Reddit is now betting on direct, daily use and the app.
Earlier steps
According to Ars Technica, this fits a series of moves: Since July, Old Reddit has required a login, and it was later blocked for users logged out for more than six months. In 2024, Reddit made its API expensive and effectively crippled most third-party apps. In tests, the mobile website pushes users toward the app; so far only about 13% of eligible users see the prompt. User reports say a desktop login requirement has been in testing since at least August.
Quarterly numbers
| Metric | Q3 2026 |
|---|---|
| Revenue | $895M (+53%) |
| Net income | $283M (+74%) |
| Ad revenue | $847M (+54%) |
| ARPU | $6.87 (+36%) |
Daily active uniques (DAUq) grew 12%. Reddit joined the S&P 500 and is aiming for $5 billion in annual revenue.
What it means for local AI
A Reddit post in r/LocalLLaMA warns that Reddit posts would no longer be searchable via a browser, which would hit local AI setups that use web search through tool calling. That is a user's assessment; how far the lockout actually goes is still unclear.
Our take
Reddit is trading reach for control: less open data for scrapers and AI agents, more data for advertising. The risk: if search results lead nowhere, even more search traffic could disappear. Details and timeline are still open. If you use Reddit as a source in AI search tools, expect gaps.
