UK launches AI Biosecurity Lab with backing from OpenAI and Anthropic
The UK government is setting up an "AI Biosecurity Lab," funded with £100 million from the state and up to £200 million in pledges from OpenAI and Anthropic. The lab will use AI to spot biological threats earlier and speed up the development of vaccines and drugs.

What's happening
The UK government is creating the AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL). The Cabinet Office announced it on October 24, 2026. The government calls it the world's first dedicated organization for AI biosecurity. The background: AI can speed up research, improve our understanding of diseases and support the development of countermeasures. At the same time, ever more capable systems can lower the barriers to harmful biological activity. The lab builds on the UK's Biological Security Strategy. The BBC reports that the funding comes as part of the Budget.
Funding
According to the government, the package totals up to £300 million in public funds and corporate pledges.
| Contributor | Contribution |
|---|---|
| UK government | £100 million |
| OpenAI | £100 million in compute and model credits, plus trusted access to relevant models through the Rosalind Biodefense program |
| Anthropic | Up to £100 million in model credits, trusted model access and technical support |
Model credits are balances you can use to run the companies' models. They are not cash. OpenAI launched Rosalind Biodefense on May 29, 2026. It supports trusted developers who use GPT-Rosalind, OpenAI's life sciences model, to build defensive applications, such as epidemic modeling, early detection and screening.
Mission and partners
The lab is meant to bring frontier AI and biological research together to better understand, prevent, detect and respond to threats. Initially, the focus is on detecting new biological threats early and developing vaccines and treatments faster. It is also meant to support the national biosecurity centers and the life sciences industry.
Other research partners include Google DeepMind, whose experts will work with the lab and which aims to provide access to Gemini and specialized science models, as well as the UK company Basecamp Research with its AI biology models. The lab is to work with government agencies, universities, industry and AI companies at home and abroad, and also to raise funds from foundations.
Structure
AIBL is set to operate as an independent non-profit, similar to the AI Security Institute, with enough autonomy to move as fast as an AI biotech company. It is part of a National AI Biosecurity Initiative with the UK Health Security Agency, the Animal and Plant Health Agency, the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory and the life sciences industry. Together with the medicines regulator MHRA, it is meant to prepare for health emergencies and help shape the regulation of AI-designed drugs. A scientific advisory board will support it; details will follow.
Other spending, according to the BBC
The BBC lists further items: an extra £120 million for the AI Security Institute, £60 million for a "National Cyber Shield" using agentic AI, and £70 million for the NERV Centre to detect vulnerabilities. It also mentions the PHP vulnerability "php2shell"; there are no reports of successful attacks. The BBC quotes John Healey on the UK's AI strategy, and AI minister Kanishka Narayan called the lab a "major new global institution."
Our take
It is notable that two rival AI companies are backing a state biosecurity body. Most of the corporate contributions are credits rather than freely available money, which can create dependencies. According to the BBC, the details of its remit and responsibilities, its location, its leadership and the makeup of the advisory board are still open. Whether the lab will reach its goals is also unproven; so far, there is only the announcement.
